In Academia Gustaviana (1632–1665) of the Swedish times astronomy definitely belonged to the program of teaching mathematics. Under the supervision of Petrus Schomerus several theses (about the Earth, the sky, the stars, etc.) were completed which respected the geocentric picture of the world considered right by the church.

The first observatory known on the territory of Estonia was established by Georg Stiernhelm, the assessor of the highest court in Tartu and the first supporter of Copernicus in Sweden, in his manor of Vasula in the 1640s.
