Academic Freedom. Studentdom of the University of Tartu through the ages

The book Academic Freedom. Studentdom of the University of Tartu through the ages allows a wide audience to get an overview of the story of the university and its student life in different eras.

The short popular science publication with its plentiful photos gives an idea of what and where the students of different eras ate, how they planned their studies and spent their free time and what a 19th-century student apartment looked like. The book includes diverse memoirs, illustrative photos and definitions of specific terms. According to one of the authors of the book, Janet Laidla, the book presents the authors’ selection of the manifold descriptions of the student life of the 19th and 20th century. Laidla hopes the book helps the 21st-century student to learn about the varied history of our dignified university.

The book was compiled by Janet Laidla and Toivo Kikkas and was designed by Tuumik Stuudio. The book is available in both Estonian and English. The book was published in 2019 by the University of Tartu Museum to mark the centenary of the Estonian national university.
