Databases and their use

In 2005, the University of Tartu Museum began documenting its artefacts in a computer-based system, at first in the Information System of Cultural Values (KVIS), which was not available online. Since March 2012, the Museum’s collection already available in KVIS (about 35% of the collection) has been transferred into the Information System of Estonian Museums (MuIS) and the documentation of the Museum’s collection will continue there.

In 2006–2007, we began cataloguing our printed matter, manuscripts and photo materials with the help the Estonian Research Libraries’ mutual online catalogue ESTER, which, since 2012, contains 2600 entries from the subcollection “Library of UT History Museum”.

The digitalisation of the Museum’s collections began in 2007 with the historic 19th century photos which were uploaded using the online catalogue ESTER and the University of Tartu Library’s digital collection repository DSpace. Currently, over 2300 photos are available in the database. At present, about 40% of the Museum’s collections are available on public databases.
